Studio Ghibli Stops Making Movies

Toshio Suzuki announced yesterday a large restructuring of Studio Ghibli. Suzuki explained in front of cameras that the retirement of Hayao Miyazaki has had too many consequences and the studio has to start cutting costs. One of the first things to do is to restructure the department in charge of creating full-length films in order to produce films for others and focus on making money from licenses of films done in the past. The team in charge of Momonoma will continue with the work, but most likely it will suffer cuts because it’s a department where almost all the employees are temporary or freelancers.

“For the moment we are going to stop making new movies for a while and rethink our priorities”

Toshio Suzuki thinks that the stop will be something temporary. On the other hand, Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t see the future of Ghibli very clear 🙂

Incense Fireworks – Senko Hanabi

A typical scene seen in parks and beaches around Japan during Summer is this:

Incense Fireworks

Senko hanabi 線香花火 is difficult to translate but it would be something like “fireworks of incense sticks”. In reality the fireworks don’t have incense but they are very similar to incense sticks in shape and size, thus the name. Senko hanabi are sticks with a small amount of powder which doesn’t blow up and lights up with fire of diverse colours during some seconds. To play with senko hanabi is fun and not dangerous at all.

People say that lighting up a senko hanabi and seeing its light go away instantly in the darkness will make you feel closer to the ephemera of things (Mono no aware 物の哀れ) and will help you being more sensitive to the transience of our lives.

Giant Game Boy

While at Super Potato, one of the most popular retro video game stores in Akihabara we bumped into this giant Game Boy. The screen was a TV that worked like a real Game Boy, I suppose by using an emulator or a Super Game Boy.
